WeMo Smart Plug Review 2017 – Smart home devices are rapidly growing in popularity. The reason being, technology is improving at an extremely fast rate, which is improving functionality and driving down the cost. Making smart devices much more accessible for the average person.
More and more everyday devices are starting to become connected in some way or another.
Belkin is an established hardware company that sells everything from routers to computer accessories, and now, smart home devices.
We got our hands on the Belkin WeMo Switch smart plug. A device that plugs into a standard outlet, and allows you to set schedules, control from anywhere in the world, run IFTTT recipes, and more.
We put the WeMo smart outlet through the ultimate test and review. Testing everything from setup, controlling it remotely through the WeMo app, and setting multiple IFTTT (If This Then That) recipes. Below is our complete review of the WeMo smart plug.
Pros and Cons of the WeMo Switch Smart Plug
What is the WeMo Smart Plug?
The WeMo Switch plug/outlet is a smart home device that plugs directly into your standard wall outlet and then allows you to automate whatever is plugged into it. You can literally plug whatever you want into the device, thus creating a smart device out of anything.
For example, you could plug your coffee maker into the WeMo Switch, and voila smart coffee! Or, you could plug your living room lamp into the smart outlet and set schedules to make your house appear to be occupied when it is not. There are many different uses for the WeMo outlet depending on your end goal. For our test we started by plugging a standard lamp into the device, from there we tested a smartphone charger, coffee maker, record player, and TV.
WeMo Smart Plug: Design & Setup
The WeMo smart outlet/plug wouldn’t connect right out of the box. At first, we were able to see the WeMo WiFi that you need to connect to first. But after we tried to connect, it lost the connection and did not reappear. This was really frustrating as this was the initial setup. First impressions count!
After a few minutes, we were able to get the device connected and working. We simply had to unplug the device and then try again.
The WeMo plug is a little big and bulky. It is somewhat similar in size to those old light scheduling timers (big and boxy). While the WeMo isn’t quite as big as those, it is fairly large and can sometimes make the second wall outlet unusable depending on what type of cord needs to be plugged in. Otherwise, the design is pretty simple. It has a manual button on the device which allows you to turn the plug on and off with a push of a button.
WeMo x IFTTT
There is a seamless integration between WeMo and IFTTT. This means you can setup different IFTTT recipes for your WeMo smart devices.
If you aren’t familiar with IFTTT it stands for ‘If This Then That’, and they are simple automation commands. For example, the first recipe we tested was turning the lights off at 11:00 PM, IF it is 11 THEN turn the lights off.
Below are 6 of the most popular WeMo Switch and IFTTT recipes:
- Toggle a WeMo Switch
- Toggle a WeMo Switch on or off with Google Home
- Track WeMo switch usage using Google Calendar
- Use Siri to toggle WeMo Switch via email
- WeMo notifications
- At specific times throughout the week turn a WeMo Switch on or off
Keep in mind, you are able to create your own recipes as well. So whatever type of automation or functionality you are trying to achieve you can more than likely come up with a simple IFTTT recipe to achieve it.
WeMo Smart Plug: The Mobile App
Overall, the WeMo Switch smart outlet is extremely easy to use thanks to the intuitive mobile app. Itis absoloutly great to have an app-controlled outlet.
The app is user-friendly and simple to figure out. The real beauty is in the apps ability to control multiple WeMo devices. Belkin currently has various smart products to choose from, all of which can be controlled from the app. They have the WeMo Mini Smart Plug, WeMo Insight Switch, WeMo Light Switch, WeMo Switch, WeMo Maker, NetCam HD, WeMo LED Lighting Starter Kit, with more devices likely to hit the market in the near future.
WeMo Smart Plug: Final Review
All in all, the WeMo plug is a great smart home device if you have a specific use case in mind. When we first got the device, we weren’t exactly sure what to plug into it. After testing multiple electronics with the device, we settled on leaving a small desk lamp plugged into the device. This, however, is ironic because we also use the LIFX smart bulb on a daily basis. The WeMo Switch smart bulb has exceeded our expectations upon initial test and review. Although we did have a slight setup issue, once the device is up and running it works very well. The remote operability is one of the biggest selling points. This device is great for anyone who would enjoy peace of mind knowing that they remembered to turn off their lights, coffee maker, or whatever else.
